Off-Cut Creatures

Turning waste into wonder

Spotting ‘eyes, ears and tails bundled together’ among the Pallet Project offcuts, Studiomama began making wooden creatures in 2010 just for fun. We created a series of small wooden creatures assembled entirely from offcuts of wood left behind by other projects. The offcuts have sold through Phillips de Pury Galleries and currently exhibited at the Design Museum London.

Studiomama’s wooden creatures

Spotting ‘eyes, ears and tails bundled together’ among the Pallet Project offcuts, Studiomama began making wooden creatures in 2010 just for fun.

We created a series of small wooden creatures assembled entirely from offcuts of wood left behind by other projects, often themselves made from repurposed materials. This repeated reuse of waste material is entirely in line with the ingenuity and sustainable ethos of the studio.

Each piece has its character and personality, and they have developed their own following online and among avid collectors. Each a one-off, they have been exhibited and sold through Phillip de Pury London and New York galleries – and are currently part of the exhibition: 'Grazie Mari: Contemporary Responses to Enzo Mari', 2014, the Design Museum London.

ART: Jack Mama and Nina Tolstrup
PHOTOGRAPHY: Richard Davies

‘Their design process is often spontaneous and playful in nature, and much like Mari their work explores imaginative play’.

Esme Hawes – Design Museum Curator of ‘Grazie Enzo Mari: Contemporary Responses to Enzo Mari.’
