Fisherman’s Hut on the seaside

Raised on stilts at the edge of the sea

Studiomama converted an old fisherman's hut on stilts on the beach near Maldon – and one of six shacks on stilts above the beach on the River Blackwater.

Renovating an old fisherman’s hut

We were asked for a proposal to renovate / rebuild an old fisherman's hut on stilts on the beach near Maldon. The hut is one of six shacks on stilts above the beach on the River Blackwater. Although the house was very rotten, the stilt structure was surveyed and found to be in surprisingly good condition, which was great news.

The location of the hut, raised on stilts at the edge of the sea, not only offers a spectacular view but also allows for an uninterrupted experience of the sea. During high tide, the sea level comes right under the house, creating a unique and immersive experience.

The brief for the interior layout of the hut was for it to be flexible and accommodate various uses including a living area, kitchenette, sleeping quarters, and a small bathroom. Despite the limited footprint, the space design suggested was optimized to provide maximum comfort and functionality.
