Cabinet of Curiosities
Following the success of our ‘Pallet Project’, we aimed to explore the potential of using reclaimed floorboards to create furniture, designing a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ with hidden compartments made of reclaimed floorboards. The cabinet was selected for an exhibition at the renowned Mint Gallery in London and the Garage in Milan.
Made of reclaimed floorboards
Following the success of the ‘Pallet Project’, Studiomama aimed to explore the potential of using reclaimed floorboards to create furniture. We designed a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ with hidden compartments made of reclaimed floorboards. The cabinet is a tall rectangular box on legs and contains a series of smaller open-fronted boxes attached to the cabinet’s back wall. Some of these smaller boxes are obscured when the doors are closed, but cut-outs in the doors reveal others.
The negative space around the boxes can be used for further storage by using their top edges as additional shelves. The simple form of the Reveal Cabinet’s exterior contrasts with the rough character of the planks from which it is made. The use of reclaimed wood gives each piece a unique quality while highlighting the character and beauty of the material. The cabinet was selected to be exhibited at the renowned MINT Gallery in London and the GARAGE in Milan.
