Fogo Island Inn, Newfoundland
Prototype lamps
Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth. Studiomama was commissioned to make prototype lamps for the 29 one-of-a-kind guest rooms. The Inn is a community asset, and 100% of operating surpluses are reinvested into the community to help secure a sustainable and resilient future for Fogo Island, Newfoundland.
Design for a cultural retreat
The Shorefast Foundation, a Canadian charity founded by Fogo Island native Zita Cobb, approached Studiomama to help design lighting elements for the Fogo Island Inn, which was under construction at the time. The Inn was envisioned as a community hub and cultural retreat for visitors, locals, and artists, featuring furniture made by local craftspeople using island-sourced materials.
Key to the project's success were the relationships between local artisans and designers. The island hosts three boat builders and a new wood workshop set up by Shorefast, with a brief to use materials ideally sourced from Fogo Island, expanding to Newfoundland and Canada if necessary. The project Studiomama was asked to focus on various lighting types, including standard, reading, desk, pendant, and wall lights.
